2011 RoundupSubmitted by Dave Glason on Tue, 2011-12-27 14:20 |
Well it has been an interesting year. A lot of stress, joy, frustration, learning and success.
I've sold a small stake in a company, learned a lot about business politics and company ownership transition, started a corporation, hired and retired my first employee, run a sole-proprietorship, had my fourth child, learned a new programming language and web development framework, interviewed for (but didn't get) a J-O-B, designed a web app which I'm currently developing, cooked a turkey dinner or two, went fishing and camping, started this site, volunteered more with local groups, learned {git redmine drupal ubuntu 11.10 arduino, cloud hosting, heroku and more}, collected and learned about electronics and robotics equipment, visited family on the coast and more.
Overall it's been a satisfying year!
The lessons I can take from this year are:
- Don't undervalue yourself - remember to include all costs of providing your product/service in your price.
- Keep busy - you have less time to worry about the decisions you make and have to make.
- Take time for yourself, your family, friends and community - its what makes your life enjoyable.
- You are responsible for your life and can choose to be happy or not.
- Know when to change - don't keep what you are doing if it's not working for you.
- Stand up for yourself - the consequences are never as bad as others make them out to be.
I'm sure there are more lessons, but this seems to be enough for now. Goals for 2012?
- Get A Healthy Philosophy launched and making money.
- Decide on the fate of Okanagan Linux Solutions.
- Move to a new house.
- Dream up a few new ideas for webapps.
That's it for the year.
