Don't hide because of a tragedy

My small community has recently been hit hard by the deaths of several young people. The most recent of which was a homicide. This has been especially tough on the community as it is a very close and safe place to be.

One of the effects of this homicide (as yet unsolved) is that people are staying home due to fear of what may be out there (although it may also be the change in weather). The authorities are issuing warnings about walking alone or in the dark and the media are sensationalising them. This is adding to the uncertainty and in my view actually makes the community less safe.

Being attacked by someone in our town is probably a lower risk than any of the following events that could happen going from one place to another.

  • Hit by a car
  • Trip and fall
  • Helicopter land on your head
  • Attack by Deer, Racoon, Bear, Cougar, Coyotes
  • Attack by Dog, Cat, Exotic pet, Cow, Goat

The warnings being given are basic common sense that are applicable at any time, not just after an event such as this.

  • Walk in groups of 2 or more
  • Don't text or wear earbuds
  • Be aware of your surroundings (how many cars are coming, is there someone behind, at the side or in front of you etc)
  • Where is the nearest building?

The reaction to this event should be that more people should be out walking, being active in the community, walking your kids to school and other events and saying hello to everyone on the streets. This not only makes for a better community, and keeps you healthy but it helps make it safer for the people who don't have someone to walk with as there are more eyes out on the streets.

I personally would like to see everyone who can, walk their kids to and from school or allow their children to walk in groups to and from school and other events even as young as Grade 1.
